Downtime with: Ian Drummond

Putting on the grown up pants can’t be as bad as it sounds. I’ve known Ian since I was 14. Him and the other guys in the Dema crew have always been like older brothers to me. For as long as I can remember Ian has always been one of those guys that can be taken more seriously and always seemed much more mature. So naturally I always felt comfortable going out skating with him and felt honored to start filming with the older guys. Not only that but he’s the kind of person you can just hang out with on a day to day basis and not get annoyed of because of all they want to talk about is skating. He likes conversation that goes deeper into the human psyche and you can definitely tell through his art. Ian is one of the first in our group to put on the grown up pants with a full time job. He still, however, is able to balance it with his creativity making growing up seem not so bad. I’ve been a fan of his skating for as long as I can remember and the Sml Wheels flow riders edit is still one of my favorites to this day. Ian has had an ankle injury since February and hasn’t been skating as much as he would like to. While waiting to recover he’s turned to drawing as a creative outlet. We couldn’t find a place to meet up for an interview but instead decided texting would be cool enough. Here’s to my good friend Ian Drummond and make sure to keep up with his art @switchbackdoodle!

PD: Let’s just do the interview over text? The core

ID: That works hahaha 1 8

PD: Are you free right now?

ID: Yea I am

PD: Cool cool, so what have you been up to lately man? I haven’t seen you around for awhile.

ID: Just working and handling business… trying to draw as much as I can in my free time. Also trying to save some cash up to go to the doctor for my ankle finally.

Easiest way to lose friends: board games, Yahtzee, Pizza

PD: Yeah man it’s weird to not see you out and about skating anymore. Now I just see snaps of you spending hundreds of dollars on markers and pumping out new drawings everyday! What exactly happened to your ankle?

IDHahaha yea man I fucking miss skating but fortunately I found drawing to focus on while I let the ankle heal. I use some expensive markers but once you start collecting them it’s hard to stop.. new colors means new drawings haha. I rolled my ankle skating at our local skatepark peak in the beginning of February.

Last man standing

PD: Man so you’ve been out since the beginning of the year! Have you always been drawing or is this something you picked up while waiting on you ankle to get better?

ID: Yea man it’s been killing me! I’ve always doodled here and there but after I started working my latest job I would have a lot of free time at work so I started drawing to kill time. After I hurt my ankle I was already so into drawing that it was a sort of blessing in disguise because I could put more time into the doodles.

PD: Have you ever gotten in trouble at work for doodling? I mean you can’t have that much free time at your job can you?…

ID: No I mean I’ll be posted in my car under some shade in some random parking lot or at a park somewhere near my job so I don’t bring much attention to myself…  My downtime at work changes day to day so sometimes I’ll get hours with nothing to do and some days I can barely fit in a lunch.

PD: Oh alright, so whenever you have free time at all you would be drawing something up. I’ve heard that there’s a guy you’re currently working with that sings christian gospel music out loud to himself… how do you deal with that on a day to day basis?

ID: Yea pretty much.. as for the gospel dude I really only deal with him at the office so if I have nothing going on I’m out haha. Shit gets hard to deal with when you’re all stressed handling some other business.. Not that I have anything against gospel music, it’s just that shit don’t sound good, put some headphones in or something you know?

The One

PD: No yeah I hear you man, keep that beautiful voice of yours to yourself haha. Have you always drawn pizzas, chops, and dinosaurs? Or is this something more recently you’ve been more interested in drawing.

IDExactly hahaha. I’ve drawn dinosaurs ever since I saw Jurassic park as a little guy haha Pizza and chops are always an interesting subject matter too. I just try and draw funny shit and I think I draw my little Dino dudes better than I draw people so they’re always in there.

PD: I back it dude! You’ve definitely created a distinguished style. Do you think skating has also influenced you in your art? Or do you see the two as two separate things.

IDHell yeah thanks! I never really considered skating too much an influence outright because I never draw skating.. however thinking about it right now I’d say my desire to be original and have something unique to present is influenced by skating for sure.

Some dinos just want to watch the world burn.

PD: Oh like you mean the importance of creating your own style that people can look at and recognize that it’s yours? Like these drawings are equivalent and give you the same satisfaction as a skate part would?

IDI definitely want to get them out and hopefully entertain some people haha. Yeah exactly. I guess you could equate them to a putting out a part, I have to get that fix somehow haha.

PD: Do you have any other plans to show your drawings or is it just all for the gram?

IDSo far I’ve just been doing it for myself and the gram trying to build the skills.. I’ve had a few people approach me for commissions and other art stuff but nothing has happened as of yet.. but I’ve only just started takin’ it seriously so we’ll see where it ends up.

Dreamin’

PD: That’s cool man, you have a more laid back style to all of this. This is what I appreciate about you as a skater also. Do you think things will change once your ankle is all healed up? Is skating still as important to your life as it was years ago when you had a shop sponsor and were getting flowed?

ID: Thanks man I appreciate it! Kind of a hard question haha! I want to skate as much as I can but also see where the art goes… I kind of see art being more manageable in the long run too haha considering I’ll probably have arthritis when I get older haha.

PD: So we probably won’t be seeing another Ian part soon? haha Yeah I definitely know what you mean since skating has always been a chance kind of thing while also risking your own physical body. So it’s definitely nice to find something outside of skating that gives you the same satisfaction.

IDHaha prolly not anytime soon but I’ll get one out haha. Yeah especially this last one, it really reminded me how easy it is to hurt yourself pretty bad not doing anything serious.

PD: I’ll be looking forward to it man! You’re one of the guys in our group also that is living an adult life now with a full time job. Does that ever discourage you from pursuing different things? Has a full time job changed your outlook on life?

IDYup payin’ my way haha, it definitely encourages me to pursue something that really makes me happy because I’ve seen and experienced how working stressful jobs that aren’t fulfilling in any way weigh a person down. Once I started working full time and having bills and debt it definitely put a lot of other people’s situations in perspective. Like how hard a lot of people have to work to maintain and how bleak situations can look when there isn’t opportunity available.

When the drugs kick in…

PD: Yeah but that’s what I think that’s cool about you. Even with a full time job and now injured, you still try to create new opportunities for yourself and at the same time it being something you enjoy doing. You make growing up something not to dread.

ID: Haha thanks dude appreciate it man. I’ve always thought the only way I’ll be happy is doing something I enjoy and thankfully I’ve found this!

PD: With that I’ll let you go so you can enjoy the rest of your night off. haha It’s been good catching up man and see you around soon! Hope that ankle heals up all nice and good!

IDHaha. No worries dude and nice catching up with you too! And thanks I hope my shit heals up too before I lose it haha!
